Chapter 16
That’s One Small Theft for Man, One Giant Problem for Mankind
My morning started hearing Jackson’s cheery voice in the hotel headquarters, where I now resided.
“Good morning. I’ve got café au lait and beignets for everyone.”
I’d planned to take advantage of today’s slow schedule and sleep in. From the sounds around me, I realized I was the only one still in bed. I flipped over my cell phone and turned off my alarm two minutes before it went off, then stumbled my way to the bathroom.
Fifteen minutes later, I had showered and dressed, and I made my appearance in the work area. Jackson pulled a cup of coffee out of the microwave, where he had kept it warm for me, and offered me a plate of beignets. I dove for the coffee and refused the beignet, to Jackson’s teasing frown.
“You’ll have one before we’re done here, Q.”
“Are you trying to comment on my willpower?”
Jackson smirked but knew enough to let that one alone. “No, I’m saying how delicious they are.”
“Has Dr. Faust moved yet today?” I asked the team, refocusing Jackson.
“A little bit inside his house at the French Quarter.” Barry gestured to his screen. “Nothing more than movement around the house.”
“But he is up and around?” Jackson looked over Barry’s shoulder. “He’s not still in bed?”
“No, he’s up. Cherry, however, is still in bed.”
I wrinkled my brow. “Excuse me? When did we put a sticky disk on Cherry?” I didn’t mean for my voice to rise, but as the Properties lead on this operation, I should know these things.
“It was my call, Q.” Jackson stepped toward me. “Her movements might be an interesting thing to watch.”
“Oh, I bet you’ll enjoy watching her movements,” I scoffed.
The Killer-Bs all smiled but left it to Jackson to talk to me about it.
“She’s his accomplice. It makes sense.”
“I agree. But I should have been told.”
“I apologize. I didn’t have a lot of opportunity to talk to you last night.”
I narrowed my gaze on him. “Not my fault, Casanova.”
“Hey, it looks like Faust is on the move.” Barry, who had powdered sugar down the front of his polo shirt, slid into his computer chair and rolled to his station. Bill and Bob also scrambled to their computers.
“Judging from the speed of travel, I’d guess he’s in his car.” Bill glanced up at his monitor while the keyboard clacked under his fingers.
“What type of car does he drive?” I asked.
“It’s a black Buick LaCrosse, current model year. Luxury vehicle, but understated,” Bob reported on his search. “License plate, oh, vanity plate NEBULA.”
“Easy to remember.”
“Stand by for the address of the first stop.” Barry studied the monitor. “He’s in the Garden District, driving west on St. Charles Avenue.”
“He could be going to the Elms Mansion to make sure everything is set for tomorrow’s show,” I commented to Jackson. He nodded.
Sure enough, he stopped at the Elms. Jackson and I had planned to scope out the venue later when Dr. Faust and his men left.
